CANNONBALL ADDERLEY
Julian Edwin "Cannonball" Adderley was an American jazz alto saxophonist of the hard bop era of the 1950s and 1960s. Born: September 15, 1928, Tampa, FL Died: August 8, 1975. Cannonball moved to Tallahassee when his parents obtained teaching positions at Florida A&M University. Both Cannonball and brother Nat played with Ray Charles when Charles lived in Tallahassee during the early 1940s. Adderley moved to Broward County, Florida, in 1948 and studied music at Florida A&M University and pledged the Beta Nu chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.. He the became the band director at Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, a position which he held until 1950.
MELTON MUSTAFA
Melton "Shakir" Mustafa Sr. was an American jazz musician, music educator, and arranger who played the trumpet and flugelhorn. Born: November 23, 1947 Died: December 28, 2017. Melton Mustafa-Trumpet player extraordinaire, arranger/composer, producer, and educator. Melton has performed with some of the top names in JAZZ including the Count Basie Orchestra, Duke Ellington Orchestra, Woody Herman Orchestra, Bobby Watson, Jaco Pastorius, George Cables, John Hicks, Charlie Mingus Dynasty, and Gunter Shuller, among many others. Mustafa has played in many of the international Jazz Festival which include the Playboy Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Ravina Jazz Festival, SS Norway Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Lugano Jazz Festival (Italy), Pori Jazz Festival, Charlie Mingus Epitaph Orchestra in Russia and many others.

William James "Count" Basie ( August 21, 1904 – April 26, 1984) was an American jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. In 1935, he formed the Count Basie Orchestra, and in 1936 took them to Chicago for a long engagement and their first recording. He led the group for almost 50 years, creating innovations like the use of two "split" tenor saxophones, emphasizing the rhythm section, riffing with a big band, using arrangers to broaden their sound, his minimalist piano style, and others.
Count Basie moved to Florida, specifically Hollywood, Florida, during his retirement years. He died in Hollywood, Florida, at the age of 79 in 1984. While his primary residence for many years was in Freeport, Bahamas, he passed away in a Hollywood, Florida
DOUG CARN
Doug Carn (born July 14, 1948) is an American jazz musician from St. Augustine, Florida, known for his several albums released for Black Jazz Records. Carn is a multi-instrumentalist known primarily for his work on organ and piano.
Carn studied oboe and composition at Jacksonville University from 1965 to 1967, then finished his education at Georgia State College in 1969. He also taught piano and jazz improvisation at Jacksonville University
He, along with Chris Lightburn and Rev. H. L. Patterson of St. Mary's Baptist Church, founded the Lincolnville Restoration and Development Committee in his home town of St. Augustine in 1979. One of the group's projects was the organizing, in 1979, of the annual Lincolnville Festival, which has continued into the 21st century and become one of the Ancient City's leading cultural events. He worked with Nat Adderley, Earth, Wind & Fire, Shirley Horn, Lou Donaldson, Stanley Turrentine, and Irene Reid.
ARCHIE SHEPP
Archie Shepp (born May 24, 1937) is an American jazz saxophonist, educator and playwright who since the 1960s has played a central part in the development of avant-garde jazz. Shepp was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He began playing banjo with his father, then studied piano and saxophone while attending high school in Germantown. He studied drama at Goddard College.
He played in a Latin jazz band for a short time before joining the band of avant-garde pianist Cecil Taylor. In 1962, he performed with trumpeter Bill Dixon at the 8th World Festival of Youth and Students in Helsinki, Finland. Shepp's first recording under his own name, Archie Shepp - Bill Dixon Quartet, was released on Savoy Records in 1963.
